For when it’s time to say goodbye (our last blog post)
Yup, this is our final blog post. More details on that in a bit. But first let’s concentrate on this delightful fall-themed drink.
Applejack and orange juice celebrate autumn flavors. Brandy and grenadine add extra punch and tingle. The result?
A drink that says hello to fall. Even when it’s saying goodbye.

The Never Say Die Cocktail
3 rums, 4 fruit juices, one terrific Tiki drink
It’s hot in our part of the world, folks. And humid.
So we need a hit of cool, refreshing Tiki. The Never Say Die is one of the most interesting Tiki potions we know. It’s a bit of a production to make, but totally worth it.
‘Cause the heat is on.

The Lucien Gaudin Cocktail
A gold-medal drink named after a French Olympic champion
Lucien Gaudin was an Olympic fencing champ during the 1920s (more history in the Notes).
His namesake drink has lively aroma, terrific flavor, and good looks. It makes a great predinner drink. Or a nice tipple while watching the Olympics later this summer.
En garde!

Cranberry Walnut Bread
An easy breakfast, dessert, or snack option
‘Tis the season for baking. Cue that sugar high.
Or not. Our version of Cranberry Walnut Bread is sweet, but not overmuch. So you can eat it without fear of bouncing off the walls.
Of course, you may want that bounce, especially during the holiday season. In which case, have seconds. But don’t forget your crash helmet.

Cranberry Buckle
An easy, seasonal dessert for fall
Chilly weather and short days can be a downer. So whip up some cranberry cheer.
Cranberries are the iconic autumn fruit, arriving in our markets just as winter threatens. And they’re a staple on Thanksgiving tables in the US.
But they’re also wonderful in baked goodies (like this Cranberry Buckle), where their tart edge cuts through sweet, cakelike surroundings like a happy surprise.
So buckle up.

The Aperol Spritz Cocktail
Cool, colorful refreshment for hot summer days (and nights)
Need a long, tall sipper that’s not too boozy? Just conjure up an Aperol Spritz (aka Spritz Veneziano).
It’s one of the world’s most popular cocktails. And why not? The Aperol Spritz is super refreshing, with a bright, tingly flavor.
It makes an excellent aperitif. And, because it’s low on alcohol, the Aperol Spritz lets you hold off the heat all afternoon long.
Just call it the summer tamer.

The Honolulu Cocktail
OJ and pineapple liven up this 1930s Hollywood thriller
Peak summer means you need peak refreshment. So we’re looking for cocktails that are lively and juicy.
Like the Honolulu Cocktail, which sports orange, pineapple, and lemon juice. The flavor is sunny and soothing, so it’s perfect for hot summer days.
Cool.

Fennel, Orange, and Arugula Salad
Colorful and tasty, this salad makes an excellent winter starter
It’s peak citrus time in our part of the world. Fortunately, oranges fit in everywhere, right?
Especially salads. In this one, orange slices cavort with the anise-like flavor of fennel and the peppery goodness of arugula.
The result? A winter wonderplate.

Moroccan-Spiced Orange and Olive Salad
Snappy and satisfying, this makes a great dinner starter
Oranges and olives together? Don’t judge.
Sweet oranges are actually a great match for salty, briny olives. And this dish is easy to make, so you can serve it any weeknight.
But it’s also fancy enough for a dinner party. So you could say this salad is diversity on a dish.

The Chrysanthemum Cocktail
Light, bracing – and pretty as a flower
Need a drink that won’t knock you off your game? The Chrysanthemum is here for you. It doesn’t contain a base spirit, so the alcohol quotient is moderate. And its rich, aromatic flavor is so satisfying that you won’t miss the extra alcohol.
The Chrysanthemum works well as an afternoon pick-me-up or predinner drink. Especially this time of year, when its eponymous flower reaches peak bloom.
Fall is perfect for planting. And you’ll definitely want this one in your garden of cocktail delights.

The Blood and Sand Cocktail
Named for a Valentino movie
Ready for a scotch-based drink inspired by a bullfighting flick? Of course you are!
In 1922, Rudolph Valentino was at the height of his fame. Cinemas everywhere were showing his latest work, Blood and Sand. It was thrilling stuff.
And this namesake drink does the film justice. A mix of scotch, Cherry Heering, sweet vermouth, and orange juice, the Blood and Sand Cocktail smolders with dangerous allure. Just like Valentino himself, you might say.
Still not enough to persuade you? Well, there’s also a tequila version of this cocktail, which is perfect for Cinco de Mayo (more about that in the Notes).
Olé!

The Hanky Panky Cocktail
Perfect for Valentine’s Day
In February, our thoughts naturally turn to Hanky Panky (the cocktail, of course).
And if the name sounds like the title of a Noël Coward play, well, that’s fitting: It was invented for an actor who mentored Coward.
More history in a bit. First, we need to learn how to mix this beauty. Because your sweetheart awaits.

Cranberry Shrub Cocktail with Bourbon
You can also make a kid-friendly version of this holiday drink
Ready for some holiday cheer? So are we.
The season calls out for cranberries, of course. And bourbon is perfect for warming a long December night. Mix them both with a tangy, vinegary shrub syrup, and you have a cocktail that even Santa can’t resist. (But we know some of his elves don’t drink, so we provide instructions for a nonalcoholic version of the cocktail, too.)
Wishing you a berry merry December.

Pusser's Painkiller Cocktail
AKA the Painkiller, this Tiki drink will soothe your soul
So it’s July, and both major US political parties are staging their presidential nominating conventions. It’s been a bizarre political season. Plus, the weather is miserably hot throughout much of the country. We need a drink.
Enter Pusser’s Painkiller. This refreshing, rum-based slow-sipper is a perfect summer cocktail.
So mix yourself one. Or two – you shouldn’t suffer through this alone.

Rum Shrub Cocktail
For July 4th, serve a libation enjoyed by George Washington
Ben Franklin too. And no doubt many of our other founding fathers. That’s because shrubs – fruit preserved in a syrup of sugar and vinegar – were extremely popular in both America and Britain in those days.
Shrub syrup is even better if you add some strong spirits to the mix. But maybe you guessed that already.
You can use almost any booze, but we’re using rum. It was by far the most popular spirit in America around the time of the Revolutionary War. And the flavor of rum blends perfectly with shrub syrup.
Ready to fuel your patriotic fervor?

Double Orange Dark Chocolate Cookies
This classic flavor combo is great for Christmas—or anytime
Back when having fresh fruit during winter was a luxury, good children often found an orange in their Christmas stockings. And if they were very good, a bar of chocolate.
So if you’re looking for a cookie that evokes holiday traditions, what could be more appropriate than one that highlights these two retro-favorite flavors? Like this Double Orange Dark Chocolate Cookie.
Fortunately, these days oranges and chocolate are both abundant all the time. Which is a good thing, because the flavor of this cookie is so rich and intense, you’ll want to make it year round.
It’s a great treat when you’ve been good. And maybe even better when you’ve been bad.

Moroccan Orange and Radish Salad
Serve this Fragrant Dish as a Starter or Side
In my local markets, California navel oranges are plentiful, inexpensive, and of excellent quality. In fact, their peak season runs from February through April, so we’re now getting them at their sweetest and most succulent. I’ve been feasting on citrus all winter — peeling and eating it for breakfast, snacks, and desserts. But with warm weather arriving, it’s time to use oranges in salads.
Enter this Moroccan Orange and Radish Salad. It combines sweet oranges with peppery grated radishes — and then douses everything with aromatic orange blossom water. That may sound a bit odd, but the combination works extraordinarily well.
You can serve this dish as either a starter or a side (it goes great with grilled meats or barbecue). And because it’s sweet (with a hint of spice), you could even get away with serving it as a savory dessert.
So think of this as three recipes in one. You can’t get any more versatile than that!
