April brings both the Oscar awards and the birthday of film favorite Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin (born April 16, 1889). What better way to celebrate than with the Charlie Chaplin Cocktail?

It combines sloe gin, apricot brandy, and fresh lime juice in a sprightly mix that shouts spring. Show-stopping flavor, you might say.

It’s rare to find a cocktail that uses Scotch. But one that adds sloe gin to the mix? And absinthe? Sounds bizarre, we admit. So of course we had to try it.

And are we glad we did! The flavor is outstanding – much more enticing than the sum of its parts.

Ah, the 1920s. Flappers. Sheiks. Jazz. Prohibition. Bootleggers. A roaring stock market.

Despite Prohibition – or maybe because of it – during the 1920s drinking gained a social acceptance it never had before. And the stock market was creating more millionaires (at least on paper) than history had ever known.

We’re lucky enough to live near the path of eclipse totality (where the sun is completely covered), so we’re gearing up! Of course, that includes laying in the makings for The Eclipse Cocktail.

A Blast from the Past

When was the last time you had a Sloe Gin Fizz?  Or a Sloe Gin Anything?

I’ll bet many readers have never tasted sloe gin.  Even if you’re familiar with it, it’s probably been a while since you’ve had it.  As in decades.

Which is too bad, because (decent quality) sloe gin has a delightfully sweet-tart taste.  It can be quite refreshing on a hot day, particularly in a Sloe Gin Fizz.  Made properly, it’s a drink that’s ideal for summer sippin’.

So we should get started learning (or relearning) how to mix it.  The sooner we do, the sooner we can enjoy our next (or first!) Sloe Gin Fizz.
