And the same conditions were true in Canada, which has always put a fair amount of rye in their whiskey - so an awful lot of rye came in from there during Prohibition (although it was watered down). Alas, rye tends to benefit from aging, so after Prohibition bourbon tended to replace rye (bourbon benefits from aging too, but young bourbon tends to be a bit better than young rye, so you could get it to market quicker). Rye isn't that popular these days, alas, which is too bad. Anyway, more than you wanted to know!
